Get a taste of Asian sensations
Different cultures present their food, song and dance

Sample a variety of Asian foods, catch a glimpse of Filipino fashions or learn to dance the hula at the Asian Pacific Festival Saturday at F. Burton Smith Regional Park in Cocoa.

The festival, presented by Florida's Space Coast Filipino-American Charitable and Educational Foundation, offers a splash of culture representing all Asian Pacific countries and islands with vendors, entertainment and stuff for children to do. It's being held to celebrate the contributions Asian-Pacific Americans have made to society, said Gina Zimmerman, who helps organize the festival.

"The mission of the festival is leadership, diversity and harmony," Zimmerman said.

May is Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month, Zimmerman said, and marks the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to America and the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad, which many Chinese laborers helped build.

Food vendors at the event will offer Asian barbecue, Filipino and Chinese foods. There will be dance performances by Filipino, Japanese, Hawaiian, Indian, Thai and Indonesian groups. Singing performances and a costume parade also will take place.
